Alice’s Herbal Henny Hot Toddy Recipe
In remembrance of black history month our first cocktail honors Alice H. Parker, an African American inventor, revolutionized home heating in 1919 with her gas-powered furnace, allowing for efficient and controlled heating in homes. Her innovation provided warmth and comfort, especially during cold winters, inspiring generations to embrace the beauty of heat and fire. This same spirit of warmth is captured in the Herbal Henny Hot Toddy, a drink that blends the richness of Hennessy—a cognac long favored in Black culture—with soothing herbal tea, honey, and spices. Just as Parker’s furnace transformed how people stayed warm, this cocktail embodies the tradition of gathering, resilience, and the deep-rooted appreciation for dark liquors in Black communities.

This warming cocktail blends the bold flavors of Hennessy with herbal tea, honey, and spices for a soothing and aromatic twist on the classic hot toddy.
Ingredients:
1 ½ oz Hennessy (or preferred cognac)
1 cup hot herbal tea (chamomile, ginger, or cinnamon work well)
1 tbsp honey
½ oz fresh lemon juice
1 cinnamon stick
2-3 whole cloves
1 star anise (optional)
Lemon slice, for garnish
Instructions:
Brew a cup of herbal tea of your choice (chamomile for relaxation, ginger for warmth, or cinnamon for spice).
In a mug, combine the hot tea, honey, and fresh lemon juice. Stir until honey is dissolved.
Add Hennessy and stir gently.
Drop in a cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise for extra depth of flavor.
Let the spices steep for a minute before sipping.
Garnish with a lemon slice and enjoy while warm.
Tips:
For an extra herbal boost, add a sprig of fresh thyme or rosemary.
Adjust sweetness by adding more or less honey.
If you like it spicier, muddle a piece of fresh ginger before adding the tea.
Perfect for chilly nights, soothing sore throats, or just unwinding with a cozy drink!
